Welcome to Kovalam for the Dermazone 2019.
It was two decades back, in the year 2000, that we, the dermatology fraternity, met at Kovalam for the same South Zone Conference, organised under the leadership of Dr. T V Gopalakrishnan Nair. I am sure many of our senior colleagues have fond memories of that event, graced by a galaxy of distinguished speakers from India and abroad.
Twenty years down, the public perception of our speciality has undergone a sea change. What was once seen as an unpopular speciality is now the most preferred among medical graduates. With the wide spread of the screen economy, the general public has become more image conscious, and rapid developments in the field of cosmetology with cutting edge technology in lasers and dermato-surgery has helped our young colleagues to steal the show.
While I am justifiably proud of these stellar achievements, I would like to use this opportunity to remind ourselves that we should not neglect our foundations in the core field of dermatology and that we must also look out keenly for developments in genetics, computational biology and so on, that I am sure are going to change the contours of our discipline in the near future.
We are planning this conference as a gateway to emerging fields, even as we take stock of what has already been accomplished. It is an opportunity for the young and ambitious to meet the grey-haired veterans and engage in a happy exchange of ideas. Let me welcome each and every one of you to Thiruvananthapuram, the abode of Lord Anantha, with the wish that you will return enriched in mind and spirit.
